A Service of the Word

Hymn

Preparation
We come from scattered places to meet with God. Let us recognize his presence with us.   (Silence is kept)

As God’s people we have gathered:
Let us worship him together.

Penitence
The Spirit of the Lord fills the whole world and knows our every word and deed. Let us then sit or kneel and open ourselves to the Lord and confess our sins in penitence and faith.   (Silence)

Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought and word and deed; We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with you, our God.  Amen.

Absolution
May the God of love bring you back to himself, forgive you your sins, and assure you of his eternal love and acceptance in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Praise  (stand)
Let us give thanks to the God of our Lord Jesus Christ
Who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing.

Before the world was made God chose us in Christ
That we might be holy and blameless before him.

Let us praise God for the glory of his grace
For the free gift he gave us in his dear Son.

To Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Give praise and dominion, honour and might, for ever and ever, Amen.

A Canticle may be sung

Ministry of the Word

First Reading

Psalm of the day or the following verses from Psalm 119

Treat me with kindness Lord, so that I may live and do what you say.
Open my mind: let me discover the wonders of your law.

Your laws are my greatest joy!
I do what they say.

I am at the point of death.
Breath new life into me as your word has promised.

When I told you my troubles, you answered my prayers.
Now teach me your laws.
Help me understand your teachings,
and I will think about your marvelous deeds.

I am overcome with sorrow. Strengthen me as you have promised.
I am eager to do all that you want.
help me to understand more and more.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever, world without end. Amen.

Second Reading

Sermon

Response

Hymn (or sung Creed)

Affirmation of Faith (The Creed is said or sung)
We believe in God the Father from whom every family in heaven and earth is named.
We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love.
We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high.
We believe in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Intercessions
Response:  Lord hear us:  Lord graciously hear us.

The General Thanksgiving may be used
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you most humble and hearty thanks for all your goodness and loving kindness. We bless you for our creation, preservation and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world through our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And give us we pray such a sense of your mercies that our hearts may be thankful and that we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, for ever and ever.  Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
Let us pray for the coming of God’s kingdom
in the words our Saviour taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.  Amen.

Dismissal
Closing Prayer
Almighty God, we thank you for the gift of your holy word. May it be a lantern to our feet, a light to our paths, and a strength to our lives. Take us and use us to love and serve in the power of the Holy Spirit and in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Blessing
May God the Father, judge all-merciful, make you worthy of a place in his kingdom.  Amen.
May God the Son, coming among us in power, reveal to you the path from darkness to light.  Amen.
May God the Holy Spirit, make you steadfast in faith, joyful in hope and constant in love.  Amen.
And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, rest upon you and remain with you always.  Amen.

Final Hymn

Final Acclamation
Let us go in peace.
We go into the world to walk in God’s light,
To rejoice in God’s love and to reflect God’s glory.  Amen
